Communication System, Over

Starting up:

All mission specialists, excluding the Flight Director and Commander, will use a communication system. The receiver stays on the counter either next to or behind the keyboard. The swivel antenna may or may not be extended. To power up the system, the top button must be pushed in and held until a number appears in the display window. The number that appears is the channel number on which that team will transmit messages. Mission specialists should not change the channel. The up arrow and down arrow will change the channel and the bottom button will change the channel by fractional increments.

Listening up:

Place the headset over the top of your head. The earpiece should fit over one ear and the cushion on the other end should rest just above the other ear..

The microphone can be gently flexed to comfortable positions in front of the mouth.

Talking :

When you are ready to communicate, press the rubber area on the left side of the handset. Wait two seconds before you start speaking. Using proper protocol, identify yourself when starting messages. When you are finished, use the proper protocol by ending with 'over.' Make sure you hold the button down until your last word is spoken. This system is very sensitive. By using a soft, quiet voice, your message will not be picked up by your neighbor's microphone. If you cannot easily hear your partner, adjust the round knob at the top of the receiver. Remember to NOT raise your voice.
