A 'beta' version of DataSlate which gives you an expandable window!

Currently, this is only a PC version.

Comments for the operation of DataSlate_new

The NEW version of DataSlate for MacIntosh System X

[ dataslateX ] (contains lessons, etc.) (about 20 MB)

NOTE: If you are running System 10.4, be sure to go under the 'blue apple' and ask for a 'software update'. Download and install JAVA 1.3.1. This improves 'reliability' and allows DataSalte to operate correctly.

PC users will need to have the Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1 or higher installed on their computer. Go to:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and select Download J2SE v 1.4.2_02, Windows Installation, JRE.

OR http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp (for free JAVA software)

The zip file should unzip to a folder called dataslate. Inside the folder is a file called RunDataSlatePC. You should be able to double click on the file and dataslate should run and prompt you for a label file to open. I have included a sample dataset in the sample directory.

If the shortcut doesn't run, you can try going into the program directory and double clicking on the JavaClasses.jar file. If your system has some program on it which opens Jar files (like Codewarrior) it may not start up dataslate. In this case you may need to change your system settings. You may build a new 'shortcut' if you like.

On the PC you will want to use File Explorer, Tools, Folder Options then File Types. Scroll down to the .jar extension and click change then set it to be opened by javaw.exe which is in the Java Runtime folder in the bin directory.

This version should handle pushpins a lot better than previous versions.

Mac users may need to download an updated virtual machine to their machine using the Mac update utility.

The 'sit' file should unzip to a folder called dataslate. Inside the folder is a file called RunDataSlateMac. You should be able to double click on the file and dataslate should run and prompt you for a label file to open. I have included a sample dataset in the sample folder. You may also download the zip file.

If the shortcut doesn't run, you may go into the program folder and double click on the JavaClasses.jar file. If your system has some program on it which opens Jar files (like Codewarrior) it may not start up dataslate. In this case you may need to change your system settings. You may build a new 'alias' if you like.

This version should handle pushpins a lot better than previous versions. The "Run Other" pushpin command can be used to display just about any type of file. The "Run Other" command will not work on pre-Mac OS X systems. Mac users will notice that the Mac version has a little Options menu at the top of the screen on the MenuBar. This is because the floating popup menu that should be displayed with control-click (or right-click on the PC) doesn't work on the Mac. So I have placed the popup menu options, mostly tool options, in the MenuBar.

Enclosed is a zip file dsnew.zip Click 'dsnew.zip' to download the NEW PC DataSlate!

It will create a directory dsnew. In that directory is a batch file dsnew.bat. Click on the batch file and a 240 x 320 version of dslate will start up. You can select File Open to open a lbl file or click on one of the icons and you will be prompted to locate the dataset lbl file on the dataslate cd. Thereafter the program should automatically open any of the datasets on the cd from the "browse" menu. Use the options menu to zoom in and out and turn on the channel 2 window. Use the channels menu to change channels. If the channel 2 window is open and selected (green border) then the window 2 channel will be loaded. If the channel 2 window is not selected (gray border) then channel 1 will be loaded. You may notice that channel 1 goes blank for a second sometimes when channel 2 is changed. You can multiple tools at the same time, not that that will do you much good. I think that some teachers have asked for the pushpin and area tools so they could measure distance or angles between pushpins. That is possible now. You reselect the tool in the tools menu to turn it off. If you try opening the gps and area or angle tool they will conflict with each other.

You can change the window size by dragging a corner of the window then if you select File, Open to re-open the dataset and the display will fill the new window.

Alternately you can open an MSDOS window and change directories to dsnew ("cd \dsnew") and type "dsnew 1024 768" to start dslate with a 1024 x 768 window size or any other size you choose.

DataSets in addition to the sets on the DataSlate CD, are listed below. The following datasets have been compressed with Stuffit. To get Stuffit Expander for PC or Macintosh, go to: http://www.stuffit.com/expander/ (The free demo version will 'expand' but not compress.)

Note: When opening DataSlate, patience is a virtue. Sometimes when opening a Macintosh in Classic mode, it is necessary to 'force quit' and open the application again.
