The downloads for this exercise are from a JPL server. They are 'Santa Maria East' and Los Angeles West'. The Tiger files come out as a 'GIF' and the 'dem' comes out compressed as a Zip.

After the 'dem' file is downloaded and 'unzipped', open it up in VistaPro and do a 'Save'. This converts the file so that may be used throughout the VistaPro procedures.

Now, load the 'DEM' file into VistaPro and 'Render a Landscape'. You may set the 'quality' for various renderings. Check a tutorial for more detailed procedures.

Here's what a 'dem' looks like:

It's an overhead view of a 'topological' map. The different elevations are designated by color and by number or by different shades of gray.

Here's what a rendered 'Landscape' looks like:

VistaPro emphasizes elevations and makes them appear greater that they actually are. (about 3x)

This view is from an elevated position over the Santa Barbara Channel, looking over the Santa Ynes Mountains toward the city of Solvang.
