Overview

This week you will begin to outline your actual WebQuest project web pages. You will create a WebQuest template for your final class project that contains all the important elements of a WebQuest. You looked at a number of different WebQuests in the last assignment and hopefully you noticed that many of them contained the same elements.

WebQuest Templates

You may wish to download one of the WebQuest templates from the WebQuest web site at San Diego State University. Select a layout style on the WebQuest Templates page at that site. The traditional version of the template uses a single web page for the student page and a single web page for the teacher page. The different sections of the traditional version are accessed using anchors. If you are new to web page design, you may wish to select the traditional, non-frames version of the template.

Frame versions of the template use multiple files. If you select a frame based version, you will need to review the purpose of each file in the Anatomy of the New WebQuest Templates page. The frame versions allow for easier navigation than the traditional version, but you may have noticed that many of the WebQuest examples that we looked at in the last assignment used the traditional layout and were still very easy to navigate.

You may also wish to design your own WebQuest template. Just be sure to include all the important elements in your template to form a complete outline of your entire final WebQuest project. You can use the Anatomy of the New WebQuest Templates page to select the important elements to include in your WebQuest template. If you design your own template, you must have one entry page to your template.

Start Your WebQuest Template

You may wish to begin filling in the template, but realize that the next three weekly assignments will focus on the problem, the process, and the evaluation sections. You should begin thinking about these things and the other parts of the WebQuest template, and you can begin adding ideas in an outline form to the template sections, but again the WebQuest template is not going to be "finished" until you submit your final project near the end of the course.

You should continue searching the web and adding links to your resource page. Integrate your current resource page into the teacher information section of your WebQuest template. Also add your name below the "Put the Title of the Lesson Here" section of the template.

Upload WebQuest Template

Upload your WebQuest to the same folder you used for your resource web page. You can give your main WebQuest page any file name you wish, but the file name extension should be htm or html. Most web servers expect the main page to be index.html or index.htm and many times these pages are the default page when only a directory folder path is given.

If you used a "frame version" of the WebQuest templates you will have to use the file names as they are, unless you want to change the menu links. They used index.htm as the main page.

As part of the next few assignments you will continue to add to your template page and replace them. You are not supposed to be "finished" with the WebQuest until your final project is submitted. You are putting the WebQuest up for review and for practice posting and updating web pages.

Be sure to test your WebQuest template after it is posted on the server. The address of your template will have this format, though your template may have used htm instead of html.

You will need to decide on the actual folder name and file name that you will use. When you are satisfied that your WebQuest template is working properly, post the URL to your resource page in the class discussion area.

Lesson Submission Form

This week you are just looking over the America's Farm Student Lessons submission as described in the Week 7 Assignment. You are not required to submit your project for about another 4 lessons. Some people may decide to start their lesson submission now, that is up to you. If you start now, you may have to go back and edit the lesson form to add details that maybe you have not yet decided.

You may wish to search the lesson data base and look at projects from past offerings of this course. On the lesson submission page click on "Search" then for the "Title:" enter a single asterisk, "*" (without the quotes). Then click the "Start Search" button at the bottom of the form. This should bring up a complete list of projects. Click on a project title to view the lesson information page created by the lesson submission database. This gives you an idea of how the lesson submission data will be used.

If you start the submission form, you will see this prompt:

Please enter the name of the folder
that contains your student exercises.
Be sure and add a / at the end of the
name i.e. clark/. This should be the one
you submitted via ftp.

At this point on the lesson submission form you need to enter the part of the URL shown in red:

http://ois.unomaha.edu/amfarm/student/yourfoldername/mainfilename.html

Be sure to test the complete URL in your web browser before you start the lesson submission form. Again you are not required to complete the lesson submission form until about 4 lessons from now.

ALSO NOTE:
You will need to remember the lesson title and password. These are used when you return to the
America's Farm Student Lessons to "Edit" the lesson submission form. You may wish to keep your lesson title short so it is easy to enter when you return to edit the submission form. But also note that the lesson title is used at the top of the lesson description page that is created from the submission form, so chose your title carefully. Keep it short but descriptive and interesting.
