Getting Nebraska DEMs
from the WWW

Launch Netscape. Click and hold on file and pull down to open location.

Enter the following location and press return:

http://www.casde.unl.edu/vn/imagery/imagery.htm (For 'Virtual Nebraska')

http://www-dial.jpl.nasa.gov/~steven/ (For 'Virtual California')

At this page click on Digital Elevation Models.

Click on State of Nebraska-1 by 1 USGS to go to the DEMs page.

Scroll through the page until you find the DEM you would like to view. The road map represents the same area as the DEM to make identifying areas easier. Note that there are three DEM sizes. Choose the size small size.

As the DEM begins to download you will get a message asking what you want to do with the image. Click Save.

You will be prompted for a location to save your DEM. Put one of your disks in the computer and then select the disk. Note the name of the file before saving in case it gets lost. Click Save and it will be saved.

You may quit Netscape or download more DEMS.

Decompressing DEMs

The DEM you downloaded from Virtual Nebraska is compressed using a windows compression. The files end in .zip and need to be decompressed to be useful.

To decompress on a Macintosh you will need the shareware program ZipIt.

Launch ZipIt. Click and hold on file and pull down to Open. Navigate to the DEM.zip that needs to be decompressed and open it.

When the next window appears, double click on the DEM to be opened.

Choose where you would like to save the DEM and click Save. The DEM will be decompressed and ready to use in VistaPro.

Use this DEM as you would any other in VistaPro. The only difference is that when you open it click and hold on file and pull down to OPEN DEM instead of OPEN.
