This tutorial is designed to have you use a feature of Photoshop
called 'edge detection'. This allows you to find the raw edges of an
image without the image itself being present. You can then label
distinguishing features and create a DataSlate SimpleStruct so you
can view your images in DataSlate. Text that is in
RED is a step that you will have
to execute. Text that is in BLACK is for explanations.
In this tutorial you will 'edge detect' an image of Mahoney State Park in East Central Nebraska.
1) First start by finding the image Mahoney.jpg on the Farm CD. It should be in a folder called Week7, in CD Images.
2) Next open the file in Adobe Photoshop using the file/open/ command.
In Photoshop the control + makes the image larger, control - makes the image smaller. (If using a Macintosh substitute the Command key for control. ie Command + or Command -).
3) In Photoshop, go to
filter/stylize/find edges. Now we will go about labeling key points using the text
function of Photoshop. We will need to choose a text color
that will show up well on the map. 4) In Photoshop double
click on the foreground square. This will let you
choose a color. Just click in the continuum of
colors and select the color you want to work with.
I have chosen red. 6) Proceed to do this
with whatever landmarks you want to label.
I have done this for several landmarks
below.
This will outline the edges on the image. It
should look like the image below.

5) The text tool is the
"T". Click on the text tool, then click on the
river part of the image. You will get a box to type
the text in. Type 'Platte River' and then click
O.K.

This is an image that is labeled in Photoshop.

7) You will now want to save your edge detected image. Go to Layer/flatten image to force your image into only one layer. 8) Go to File/save as... and
choose a name that is different than the previous filename.
Be sure to select the file type as a jpeg. |

To send your image to JPL and have it converted to SimpleStruct for use in DataSlate, you will need a username and password. Send for the username and password.
