xxxxxxxxxxx, this is quite an impressive list of web-sites. I did find a few bad links - mostly in the Powerpoint section.
I visited several different sites - in particular, the list including all the Department of Ag sites for the States. It's interesting to see how each state has a somewhat different emphasis (as would be expected.)
These are sites all fun to visit and most have great information - it just takes some time to sort it out. That's why it is so useful for the 'Virtual Farmers' to sort out the 'grain from the chaff' so to speak.

The format that we now have to set up our Webquests is very helpful. I like the idea of having an Introduction, Task statement, Process, Resources, Evaluation, and Conclusion. I’m not definitely sure where to state the Problem, in the PBL context. Other questions I’m asking myself are how many links should there be? Should I use tables, anchors? How long should it be? The copyright sites were good, but I am still not sure I know if I can legally use pictures from other websites. I understand I can use graphics from clipart sites.
The Webquest sites, as I recall, did not have student or teacher pages exactly like our templates. I like the templates and plan to use them. I think it is good to link to them.
The websearch is long and laborious, but the tutorials were helpful. Again, what a lot I’ve learned, and yet, how much more to learn!!

You are exactly correct, xxxxxxxx. The copyright laws are not totally specific because of several limiting factors. If you make some changes with an image, how much is too much? It is not clear when changes are made whose image it becomes. Does it stay with the original or convert to the new editor?
Mostly, the basis for using someone else's images (for example) is that you can use some stuff (but not too much) as long as the material you produce is not being offered for sale or renumeration of some kind.
It's probably best to err on the side of caution. However, one can certainly see the dilemma of who belongs to what in the music field with Napster and the others.
Have a great ski vacation!

Thank you for your comments!!! I couldn't agree more. Also, the questions you asked were some of the same I had on my mind! I guess I'll wait to see the responses from the instructors on your response. Thank you again for putting into words the questions I also have! :) xxxxxxxx

xxxxxxxx,
When you create your webquest I think that the logical place for the statement of the problem is in the task section. This is where you lay out what the students are going to do. State the problem here and give some guidelines about how to accomplish it.

As far as anchors, links, etc...this is a matter of web design and is up to you. I personally like to have seveal pages that connect to one another rather than one long page that has much scrolling. If you have a long page anchors are important with returns to top to eliminate scrolling. You will have a lot of links on your resource page and probably have numerous others as well. Again you are talking about web design and this is a personal taste. As you search the web you may want to note what you like and don't like so you can incorporate the elements you like. Hope this helps.

xxxxxx, Concerning copyright issues: Sometimes if you find a photo on another site you can e-mail the site designer and ask for permission to use the picture. Sometimes they will agree to any use. Sometimes they ask you to give them credit which you can do by imposing the label on or under the picture by using a table to insert the picture in your Webpage.
Number of links is dependent on how much research you want students to do, length of time for the lesson, how you intend students to pursue the question or questions etc.
Web design is up to you but scolling can get cumbersome. You can link several pages like we have done with our lessons for this class. For instance develop a scenario page, an assignment and objective page, an assessment page, a research link page etc. and then link all of them to each other to allow the student to move to what they need when they need it.
A good web search engine for searching for media resources is AltaVista. There is a media link right on their initial page and then you can indicate whether you are looking for media, graphics etc. Read the fair use statements on these pages that provide graphics, photos etc. Sometimes you can just search for a topic like "farms" or "barns" and get pages of pictures. Make sure you have linked to the media/audio search.
I cannot remember if we mentioned a link to a site called www.cooltext.com. You might want to explore that site for interesting titles for your pages.
Hope this helps with some of the issues you have presented.

Some of the others mostly listed there work. Oops, guess someone is behind a bit or better yet alot. However, I did learn a lot so far. The computers are just starting to be installed in the science room. Except one small factor, no actual CD or diskette insert on any in the room. Yikes. Sounds like everything has to go through a server, etc. Will try and make web pages with the two most advanced classes, which are the Biology and Chemistry classes. Hate to see that type of talent wasted without at least trying this out this school year. Possibly even a web quest design to for the students that do not have to do a science fair project. WOW! What possibility!

What page would be the best for a web page? Would it be Netscape composer, front page, or note pad. Or another that is not listed. Have not decided if this is a gusty call or a gutless call. Time will tell. Good luck on this.

Will be gone the most of next week while being in Saint Louis at a NSTA convention. xxxxxxxx was talking about it but will have to wait and see if any of them go or not.

Question! Do I just work on the just the Hanta virus project or both the Bumble bee and the Hanta virus. After looking at the web quest project, it would be better just to do one. Is it really involved with agriculture? Whoa the questions are really popping up! Anyway the door is realy open NOW!

xxxxxxx, You are best to just do one project and tie it into agriculture. If you are going to use it in class this year, what works best with your remaining curriculum might well be the determinant. Remember to keep the agricultural aspect though both topics you have mentioned lend themselves to this perspective. It would depend on how you set up the question/problem as to whether it is agriculturally based. You could also make it a cross-curricular project by developing the bumblebee unit for science and the hanta virus for science or health.

I do not know if you can still download Claris Homepage or not. Students in the past have used composer and frontpage.

A webquest science fair project might be a possibility for your students where they develop a problem and show the process of using technology to investigate and resolve the issue. Ie. Problem-based scenario: You have been given the opportunity to develop a science fair project and justify why it is a good project to pursue. You could then make stipulations about topics surrounding the impact of honeybees or the hanta virus on agriculture, farmer's wellbeing etc.

Just some thoughts...

xxxxxx,
Isn't it great getting all that new hardware!!! Sometimes you come up with some interesting issues. At my school new computers came with no floppy drives as well and you would have thought the world was about to end. They ended up buying external floppies for alot of people.

As for an editor. Netscape composer is free. There is a lot to be said for free but in my experience it is not as easy to use as a true stand alone editor. I would probalby go with Front page (even though I could do without Bill Gates and Claris Homepage is out of production). The cost is around $50. It seems to be powerful and easy to use. Notepad will not work as and HTML editor as far as I know.

As for projects I think the tack you want to make to to focus on the Bees and how insects impact ag. That meets the ag part of the course for us and it would be a cool project. I don't know if people realize how important insects are to us and we kill an awful lot of good insects along with the bad when we use insectisides. Then if you want to a logical extension could be the Hanta virus. Transmited by insects? or rodents infected by insects? This is a great extension idea and has some real science in it for the students as well as lot of possible PBL.

This is the area which takes the longest time. Searching for educationa ag sites isn't easy, as many of the teacher sites do not even have an ag section.I have spent many hours at school, late , doing searching, and am getting many sourses. Now I am in the process of evaluation, and which sites I'll use.

Web Quests for upper Primary, are rare. Primary sites I found are too easy or too hard for third grade. I am going to write this to fit the children I teach, which is all abilities, reading levels, kids with second language , etc.

I am thinking of linking the quest to the community study of Grand Island, and the Social Studies area of farming. I have thought of possibly doing three sections..animals..sheep,cattle, machines ...tractors and attachments, crops ...corn, wheat. Perhaps like they choose or are assigned an area, but then they choose their study of a specific area. The assessment rubric will be one I havecreated , and have students know what they are expected to do before they begin this quest. The product would be something put up on the web. Students can write their findings, and aI can copy and paste it into the web page.

The page for submitting the lesson info : standards , etc., is too wide for reading some of the info when I use AOL as my on-line connection. Their box ares are small, and it is very difficult to read the whole thing. It also won't print out correctly, if I want a hard copy to use as my first draft pattern. I also can't copy & paste in into a wd processing document.Aol makes it hard to put up a web page, and a word processor page at the same time.

Yeah, AOL has it all figured out, don't they?

The community study is a nice idea - especially by breaking it into the segments you have suggested. This ought to give a wide latitude for the student selection of a topic and yet allow narrowing nicely to a specific area. As I think you mentioned before, there aren't many activities for 3rd grade folks. This will be a welcome addition.

The 'Announcement Page' (the one you get to when the Farm opens up) has the 'First Farm Web Pages' link and the 'Farm Database of Resource Links' (for the 3 web site links) is at the very top of the page.

The link to your final project should be:
http://ois.unomaha.edu/amfarm/student/bfoster/index.htm

This is the address for your initial page too, so if you wish, I can change the name of your initial page to something like 'index1.htm' so that you can retain that project as well - just with the new page name at the end.
Then your final project can use the URL above and we will be all set.

To begin to build your final project 'Teacher Lesson Submission Page', this link is also on the 'Announcements Page'. Here is where the 'Teacher Page' stuff begins. Just hit the the 'Create' link and a 'general form' appears.

Did this answer the questions? Don't hesitate to contact anyone of us for help ... That's why we're here!

xxxxxxxxx

PS - I have a meeting at 10 AM but till then and after about 11 AM, I shall be at 'your beck and call'.

Almost forgot....

When it comes time to upload the final project, the reference page is: (in week 3)

http://ois.unomaha.edu/amfarm/week3/create/how.htm

Knowing that we both the recall the misery you went through trying to upload through Grand Island's firewall, can you upload the project at home? Thanks.

I really enjoy reading about everyone's ideas. There is so much to learn in so little time! I learned a lot about web design by looking through the WebQuest projects. I know how I want to set mine up, I just have to settle on one idea. Fortunately I have been working on my resource list for the ideas that I have as we've been going along so most of that work is in place. I had better decide on my topic soon!

I will be at the NSTA conference in St. Louis as I see several from the class will be too. I will be presenting a curriculum project along with a collegue of mine. Friday at the American Center from 12:30-1:30. Stop by and say hi!

Originally I thought I would definately do something with the Platte River flooding vs successful farming in that area; then I thought about examining urban sprawl and the destruction of habitat along the way. Currently, I am thinking about something with genetics in the area of genetically altered food sources. Yes, I do need to make up my mind quickly!
