I really got "hooked" on this site! I found my back yard, my dad's farm and the farms where my sisters and their families live!

Our campus at Thomas Jefferson High School is divided by a railroad track! Just recently, during an ice storm, a train had problems with its brakes and those of us who got caught on the south side of the tracks didn't get into the school building until the end of first period! We have a gym on the south side of the tracks so we all waited there. Anyway, that particular situation triggered some ideas for using terraserver.

Assume that someone bequeathed 15 million dollars to Thomas Jefferson High School to be used to build a new high school. Students would be asked to find a new location for the high school within an 8-block radius of the current high school. The site would have to be a square block. They would use the Terra Serve web site to analyze the new location as far as access from main streets, any conflict with railroad lines, and the number of properties that would have to be purchased for demolition for the new school. Students would be asked to create a presentation comparing/contrasting the old and new location for the school board. The project could be expanded by focusing on the financial limitations of purchasing properties, building costs, etc.

You are right when you talk about getting hooked on TerraServer. It is really cool!!!. I like your idea about how to use TerraServer.....unfortunately there is one problem. I doubt if you could replace TJ for 15 million. It would be fun to try though.....

These are the sorts of problems encountered by the folks in the 'real world'. These are also the very problems that need to be looked at by folks with fresh ideas who don't realize that you can't say "This will never work because.....".

That is neat to check out the location for a high school with so much money. Especially which side of the tracks would they put it on. Where are the most people or students on? Thinking about he same idea with a garbage dump since it is usually trucked to some location.

Thanks for the idea with the school situation.

This WAS a fun site to manipulate...I can see how students would love this!

I had a great deal of fun manupulating and searching the site of the State Capital. I used to teach right across the street from the Capital in St. Mary's School! So, I played around with this for quite awhile and then tried to go South in Lincoln to locate my home there. (Yes, I still have a home there and am in the process of trying to sell it!) From what I could find, I don't think the map when that far south. I noticed it was taken from 1986 and I'm sure the roads weren't even established south of 40th and Old Cheney where my house currently is.

Possible student ideas or lessons for them would be to find their homes as well as the school. For the more advanced student, I think it would be fun to research rivers and find where they could tap into to establish possible irragation sites.

Good observations. I think that everyone is interested in finding their own backyard.

TerraServer is an obvious fascination with which to work. It has a place in almost any project because of the motivation to learn and explore. Locating various fields, studying their shapes and sizes would be interesting. However, because TerraServer can locate almost anything in the U.S. and many other places on the earth, I began to brainstorm about studying geometric shapes in buildings and formations. For example, the Washington monument is a pyramid, the dome at Epcot Center is a sphere, the Pentagon is an obvious geometric shape, and then maybe students could find the Pyramids of Egypt.

You are right about the many applications of TerraServer both in the US and around the world. It is a motivating site as you said. Good observations.

My entire family had a good time with this. We built a house in the middle of a farm field 2 years ago and were able to find the spot where we built (4 years before we built it). I think students would have fun using this to locate familiar and famous places. I have had a tough time "seeing" things in these images; however, working with familiar territory clears things up a bit and should make looking at unfamiliar territory easier next time.

This also lets us see how small our towns and cities look in relation to the surrounding farm ground.

Viewed aerial photos:
- an uncle's farm in Republic County, KS
- Anaheim CA and Disneyland
- Fremont-Platte River to west and south
- Valley- found a brothers house in Ginger Woods
- Gretna- found a sisters previous residence, her new residence in Gretna did not exitst (1996 photo)
- followed interstate past Sapp Brothers to Millard
- picked up 680 to W. Dodge and Westroads, Regency, Westside HS, Elmwood Park, UNO, Aksarben and the neighborhood I grew up

I had a lot of fun playing with this when I probably needed to move on to some of the other things and catch up!

I also viewed a relief map of US and saw Great Lakes, Rocky Mountains, Great Salt Lake, and it took awhile to track the Missouri and Platte Rivers in the Great Plains to finally determine some of the natural boundaries of Nebraska and if I'm not mistaken, was able to pinpoint Harlan County Resevoir. Also spent time on relief of Pacific Ocean and located Hawaian Islands and was surprised that to the north and west of the islands there appeared to be a continuation of the string of islands that never rose above sea level.

Remote sensing can be fun and exciting as a person gets the feel of it. It appears you are becoming quite comfortable with this experience.

The links that were given, such as the state capital in Lincon.
It would be good for foueth graders who study Nebraska, and visit the building. The famous sites for the country connect to the study of US history well

Looking for my city is a bust. There were no images of Grand Island to be found.Since third grade studies their city, they would do better to take a look at the Casscade Disk images of Grand Island.Perhaps I need to work at this longer to get an image.Itried various times and days, using the advanced search, putting in the correct info, and got nothing. If I had this problem, I am sure my classes would also have a problem.

It seems that looking for famous palces works well.

If you type in Grand Island in TerraServer you are correct that it does not appear.....So I did a click search on the map of the US. The entire US is covered. You just keep clicking in (zooming) until you get down to where landmarks are recognizable. I ended up clicking down to where I found Ayr, NE and then I knew that I needed to go NE to find Grand Island. The arrows around the image will give the next image in the directions selected. I found a 1994 image of GI and a 1991 topographical map.

Absolutely correct! There are buttons jst below the heading called 'Advanced Find' The 'topo' button gives you a map with which to search and the 'image' is the button which takes you to the photo types MS does not announce changes they may have made. Just so that you are not startled if you go into the program and notice that things have changed!

My entire study center had a great time with this site. Of course, we were all excited to find our houses, the school, and other landmarks. Most kids were going to go home and try it on their computers! I am amazed at the "close-up" shots. I can even see the fence in my backyard. We also did a comparison of urban sprawl around Omaha. It is incredible. We then talked about how urban sprawl affects the habitats of many other living things. We know of a tree that was saved from being bulldozed in order for a hawk to finish raising her young. As soon as the little guys flew the tree came down. That is sad. The raptor recovery team is very concerned about all of this. Anyway, we downloaded pictures, made overheads out of them and then did some overlays. I think we'll save the information for the spring and use it during our ecology unit. Thanks for the great website!

Since we were at the state tournament for BB, it would be neat to find Pershing Auditorium, Lincoln East Public School, and the Sports Center in which the games are played. This would give them practice in using this TerraServer. Did noticed that the State Capitol Building had a lot of repair work structures fastened to it. The students noticed it to, so that would also be a good comparison to work with it, etc.

The Missouri River would be a great one to look at below the Sioux City area compare to the part above it when comparing channeled river versus nonchanneled river. Should be able to see the meanders and some oxbow lakes present here.

Waterloo is in a flood plain along with Valley. The old Niobrara was also in a flood plain until it moved in the mid 70's. This would be great to observe as well. That is to notice the broad tographic map lines along a flood plain versus the non flood plain. Could compare this to agriculture and how it changed from leveling the land to pivot farming.

WOw! So many aspects to explore with this. Thanks for this unique learning tool.

xxxxxx,
Glad that you liked TerraServer. It is definitely a great learning tool for students. It captures their attention and can be extended into alot of different areas. BTW how did you do at State BB? I don't recall ever seeing Waterloo in the scores.

The boys did get third in the overall ratings for those that followed the team. They got beat by Ewing in the last two seconds or less. One of those that they had about 20 seconds to get the shot off and they missed it under the basket and one of Waterloo guys rebounded it however, they grabed it from him and put it back up and avoided the big guy of ours, which is 6"8' tall. and it went in. Called time with about 1.8 seconds and got it to half court and out of bounds on another Tiger player. The out of bounds play was to be a half court shot from out of bounds and the big guy would dunk it in. But it did not work out. They almost beat Greeley but their Tiger luck was not to be the case. Our big guy xxxxxxxx did get all conference for the D-2 out of the five for this class, which is a super honor. However, the better team does not always win like the Class A when they gave the number 1 ratings to Lincoln SE with two losts instead of Lincoln East which won the State Championship game.
It was a very rewarding experience being their with the team, etc.
