I'm impressed with these projects. They are very thorought
and extensive. It seems from my first impression that the
web quests will be more appropriate for my curriculum. The
digital projects seem to involve lots of Math.

The Elkhorn digital project was very interesting and offered a
variety of web resources that I plan to read more extensively later. The comparisons of the Platte River Valley in that project also presented concepts that may be appropriate for my curriculum.

The web quest on careers in agriculture was very impressive. I particularly liked the floating menu on the framed pages. I would love to learn how to do that! :-) I've never really understood the commodities concept of marketing so that web quest may be one I should complete on my own! It also provided some useful web sites.

I was overwhelmed by the technological skill that must be requried to develop these projects. The goals were clearly stated and linked to educational objectives. Student directions were clear and complete.

I examined the webquest "Farming--Effect on the American family and society" project. I was intrigued by the title and thought that the topic would be relevant to many of my students. The lesson required students to consider factors such as economic growth in rural areas, family history, and personal budgetary needs, when considering a career selection. This type of project would seem to make multidimensional problem solving more accessable to the learner.

I selected the "Pioneer Pizza Delivery" digital project for review. The author of this project obviously knew how to reach students with "tongue in cheek" humor. The "hook" of "pizza delivery" - a topic near and dear to many teens - makes the mathematical applications seem more relevant to students. The "tools" needed are clearly presented and explained. Students are challenged to understand the tools, acquire data, and present a solution.

I like the digital projects because they seem somewhat more concrete for my students. However, on a personal level, I prefer the webquests. They seem to offer more possibilities for discussion responses.

As to which type of project I plan to do....well, I will be happy if I am able to produce anything resembling a quality project in either format!!

You picked two good projects to look at! They are both by instructors of the class xxxxxxx (pizza) and Farm effects (xxxxxxxx). The tech skills can be daunting but hopefully we will lead you through. Some of the other WebQuests are built in templates from San Diego State U. It is just a fill in the blank form. It makes a great project with little HTML to deal with. Glad you liked what you saw.

I really like the web quests. I teach language arts and found a web quest about creating an argument for keeping Harry Potter in the school library. I think my students would really enjoy completing this web-base activity. I also liked the Contact a Farmer web quest. I would like to arrange this type of e-mail communication between my city-student/kids and some rural/farm-student/kids.

The Pioneer Pizza Delivery sounds like a great project involving math and technology. I have a hard time figuring out how I would use something like this for a literature unit. When I looked at Elkhorn – a Community Study, I thought that I could maybe use something similar to discuss the town of Maycomb in To Kill a Mockingbird. I don’t know; I’ll see.

You obviously looked at some good projects and have some creative thoughts forming. (everyone likes that pizza project!)Just one note to consider....your project has to have an agricultural theme. This is a very broad statement and should pose no real problem to you. Looking forward to seeing what develops.

As many people have pointed out, it is very impressive to view these projects. They are innovative, complete, interesting, and appear to have taken a lot of time to create.
The Image Processing/Visualization project I examined was “County Fair”. I was attracted to it because of the study of vectors. Being a trigonometry teacher I teach vectors, but have never seen then presented in this way. The remote sensing and the pictures of the different cities were motivational which made the study even more exciting. Of utmost interest were the use of trig, the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to solve the problems. PBL at its best I think.
The WebQuest Project I chose to examine was “Commodities Trading and Using Technology”. The use of Excel and Power Point is so very important in today’s world. They appear to be common tools in business and many other careers. This project prepares students in the use of these software packages as well as the Commodities Market. The various Exchanges are also a routine part of our lives today. Students need to be prepared. The author of this site pointed out its application to several subject areas, one being math if students were to analyze data with respect to trends and fluctuations.

Glad that you liked the projects. You picked some good ones. The real power in projects like this is the interdiciplinary stuff that you can do. The commodities project has a lot of curriculum built into it. I will be interested to see what you come up with being a math teacher myself.

Being an Elementary teacher, I immediately went to Teacher Resources and clicked on Children's Literature. What a thrill for me....I didn't know that entire books could be accessed this way! I can't wait to get back to the classroom and share a story with the students on the computer. I'm sure they'll love it just as much as I did! :)

Where were you when you found the Teacher Resources? I am not familiar with this. The past projects to take a look at are in course documents/course overview/into to remote sensing/assignments The links to the projects is at the bottom of the assignments page. Take a look...you will see more that you like...I think.

Due to the fact that I don't even seem to be able to correctly downsize my jpeg I submitted, I'm not sure this project would be for me! :) I certainly hope everyone has a good sense of humor when it comes to the personal pages. Sorry, kids, I really did make a galliant effort to correct the jpeg....over an hour to be exact, however, I couldn't get the "reset" or "submit" button to reappear.

I think I can relate to what you went through with frustration and wanting to know what am I doing here. Nice to here someone else had a similar experience. However, dedicated as we are, we do not quit with the first of the last frustration. Thanks for making me feel better and that I was not the only one. WOW!

I see many imaging projects that fit for 5th grade on up. Just a few that go for the lower areas where I have been teaching.(Gd.3/4)In doing Web Quests, there were two lower grade projects.
That would easier to replicate for my students level.Web Quests are more the area I might like to think about doing.

I looked at the one about a flood plain, because Grand Island sits one along the Wood River and the Platte. Doing one about the flood plain here could be interesting since we've had lots of snow this winter.

I have a web page to share about how to build web pages I got from the Tech Fair in Grand Island on 2/2/01. It has great sources to learn how to do a quest.

Atlas Map of Nebraska reviewed. A wonderful job done in the detail and imformation avialable on one map! I experimented with the zoom, center pivot locations and soil information (which I didn't understand) as well as just playing around with it for awhile.

I was not able to enter the other Project site.

Wow! What a great selection of projects. I am
intrigued by all of them. Of particular interest
were LIVING IN A FLOOD PLAIN and COMPARING THE
LOWER PLATTE RIVER (etc.). Since Fremont is built
along the Platte (which frequently floods due to
ice jams) I am thinking that my science classes
could do some interesting projects combining ideas
from the two listed above. Currently, we are
studying the effects of channeling a river on
endangered species. We have several endangered
species of birds that nest on sand bars in the Platte River.
Obviously they've survived flooding and drought
situation, but could they survive channeling? We
tend to think not! I am going to take back some
of the ideas presented here to my students and
let them take off with it...we'll see how it
goes.

I am impressed by the number of very excellent
projects done by students in the K-8 grade level
areas. As a middle level science teacher (and
former high school science teacher) I am concerned
about the quality of problem-solving activities
that we ask our "little kids" to do. It is obvious
that good inquiry based projects are happening all
over...hurray!

I read through many of the projects; I liked the
project presented by Patti Carstens regarding the
effects of irrigation on the existing groundwater
supplies. This will always be an issue in Nebraska and
the surrounding states that are affected directly
by the flow of groundwater through Nebraska. Another
great idea!

I heard a comment from a district judge to a group of attorneys who had just received their diplomas from the University of Kansas a few years ago. He said (in part) that "If a person wanted to stay in one job for the rest of his career, he should practice in water rights."

First of all, I did see it somewhere but exactly where was it. The technology is getting in there, just a little slower at times. Search through the assignment #1 but could not find it again. It was there week #1. YIKES on trying to relocate it.

From memory the web quest was great with a lot of ideas, resources, drama, and will power. Patience is probably the key to this and keep remembering where this was and that was.

The image stuff would be great to use for a variety of subjects and even for IRA learning. Neat stuff. Just need to refind it. Would like to use this type of stuff for possible pollution detection by different types of colors to sense erosion coming in, etc. Also to preview history on what things looked like before things happened as they happened.

Webquest Project has a lot of neat web pages and everything. Do not have to search the entire web when having this tool as a resource. Hopefully, it will be there for all of us to use again and again. Would like to show this to elementary teachers and math teachers and history teachers. Think you got the picture which is to show off something neat and wanting to share. Do not know if this type of thinking is an ok thing to do or not. WOW o WOW!

Someone needs to practice playing around on this more and get more use to what they are trying to show. I need to be found once in awhile. Kind of keeps a person sense of humility on top where it is suppose to be to better understand what the students are going through.

Finding only two projects in all of the Subject categories was a surprise to me. I found the Cracking Eggs Project interesting and know my students would have fun with this. I liked the problem solving approach as well as the comparing and mathmatical skills required to complete the task.

Although the levels of the projects here are a bit sophisticated for my students, there were projects that I really found interesting and applicable to our curriculum.

The Elkhorn: A Community Study was a nicely completed project. I could adapt many of the lessons to fit the needs of my students. Finding main roads, rural and urban areas, and researching growth in the community are all areas of exploration of interest and ability-age appropriate.

Another Project I found interesting was Rolling Around Town. My students would find calculating bus stops, distances, routes, etc. to be valuable since many of them are transported by the bus to school. Also, many of them depend on public transportation as their means of getting around town.
